Ordering a wedding cake

This page out-lines what you can expect, from your first enquiry to receiving your dream cake on your wedding day.

Initial contact

When you first contact us there are a few things we need to know

  • How many people you are expecting at your wedding.
  • If the cake will be served for dessert or with coffee (this is important as dessert servings are bigger than coffee servings so you will require a larger cake if you are serving it for dessert).
  • Have you thought about a style? The three basic styles are naked (no icing on the outside), semi naked (a thin layer of icing but you can still see the cake) and full cover which is when the cake is completely covered with icing.
  • Do you want flowers on your cake? Some brides want the flowers to tie in with the overall flower theme and some don’t. It’s totally up to you - we can source the flowers for you or you can have your florist look after that side of things. It’s better if we can place the flowers on the cake as there is skill involved in attaching the flowers to a cake, so if you have your florist source the flowers then they will need to get to us the day prior to the wedding.
  • Do any of your guests have dietary requirements? This may change the price a little if more expensive ingredients are required. We do cater for all types of dietary requirements.
  • Will you require delivery? We can quote you for delivery based on a mileage plus time formula.

The quote

Once we have all the necessary information we will write you a quote. If you feel the quote is acceptable then we can go on to the cake tastings.

Tastings

Cake tastings are sent out every few months by courier. You choose six flavours and will receive enough for two people to taste. The tastings are $30 including courier to a town address.

Cake flavours

You can either choose to have your whole cake as one flavour, or choose a different flavour for each tier. This is useful when managing guests with dietary requirements. For example you may have a few gluten free guests so you decide to have the top smallest tier of your cake gluten free.

Some couples like to meet face to face and talk through exactly what they want and some are happy with a phone consultation. It’s totally up to you.

Payment

The next step is securing your date by paying a 50% deposit. This is outlined in the quote. Without a deposit your date is not confirmed.

We are happy for you to make changes to your cake up to a month prior to your wedding when you will need to pay the remaining 50% payment.

On the day

On the day of your wedding we will deliver the cake a few hours prior to the ceremony. We can liaise with you regarding this or the venue manager. All we need to know is the ceremony time and where the cake is to be placed.

It’s not usually necessary to require refrigeration as the cakes take quite a while to come to room temperature. At Finom we use swiss meringue buttercream on our cakes which is more stable than other types of buttercream. If the day is forecast to be very very warm a cool room may be a good idea - the cake can be placed just prior to the guests arriving.

Now all you have to do is relax (finally) and enjoy your beautiful day!
